Unexpected Changes
When something is different from what was expected: a plan, a person, a cup, a routine.
If it’s happening right now
- Say what has changed in one short, plain sentence: “The park is closed today.”
- Name the feeling without arguing with it: “You really wanted the park.” Let it be okay to be upset.
- Offer a small, concrete next step or a choice of two, rather than a long explanation.
- Show what is still the same, such as who is with them, or what comes next, using a picture or a few words.
- Give them time. Practise the idea later, when things are calm, rather than in the middle of it.
These are everyday suggestions, not medical advice. Everything below can wait until your child is ready.
