How to use these pages

  1. Print on A4, single sided, at 100% — not “fit to page”.
  2. Cut along the dashed lines to make the cards.
  3. Ask the question, then ask “what can you see?” before anything else.
  4. The last page is for you, not for the wall.

Why cards

Cut these out. Show the picture, read the question, and talk.

The three answers

Cut these into strips and lay the three out under the matching card.

    • She is going home soon.

    • The path is muddy and slippery.
    • She is showing him something.
    • They are going to the shop.

  • 3

    • Water spilled on the floor.
    • He is picking up a toy.
    • He is tying up his shoelace.

    • It is lying where people walk.
    • It is nearly time to go home.
    • She is helping tidy the toys away.

    • The ground is wet here.
    • She is looking for her towel.
    • She is going to get changed.

    • He wants a turn on the tablet.

The clue is the useful column. If your child is stuck, point at the clue rather than saying the answer.

    She is putting sunscreen on first.

    Clue: Look at what Mei is reaching for.

    Ask what people do first on a bright day outside.

  2. 2. Why is Jo holding Grandad's hand?

    The path is muddy and slippery.

    Clue: Look at the path in front of them.

  3. 3. Why is Ravi wiping the floor?

    Water spilled on the floor.

    Clue: Look at the floor under his hands.

  4. 4. Why is Nia lifting the chair?

    It is lying where people walk.

    Clue: Look at where the chair is lying.

    Ask what Ms Bell would have to walk around.

  5. 5. Why is Kit walking so slowly?

    The ground is wet here.

    Clue: Look at the ground by Kit's feet.

  6. 6. Why is Arlo telling Ms Bell?

    A toy has broken.

    Clue: Look where Arlo is pointing.

    The useful part is telling somebody, not working out who did it.

  7. 7. Why did Tabi step back?

    Grandad is carrying a full cup.

    Clue: Look at what Grandad is carrying.

  8. 8. Why did Sam stop and turn round?

    His helmet is still on the step.

    Clue: Look at what is on the step.

    Ask what Sam puts on before he rides anywhere.
