How to use these pages

  1. Print on A4, single sided, at 100% — not “fit to page”.
  2. Cut along the dashed lines to make the cards.
  3. Ask the question, then ask “what can you see?” before anything else.
  4. The last page is for you, not for the wall.

Why cards

Cut these out. Show the picture, read the question, and talk.

The three answers

Cut these into strips and lay the three out under the matching card.

    • Somebody to read her a book.

    • Nia's shoelace has come undone.

For grown-ups: the answers and the clues

The clue is the useful column. If your child is stuck, point at the clue rather than saying the answer.

    Tabi is using the scissors.

    Clue: Look at what Tabi is holding.

  3. 3. Why did Sam stop and wait?

    Nia's shoelace has come undone.

    Clue: Look down at Nia's shoe.

    Ask what it feels like when somebody waits for you.

  4. 4. Why did Arlo move his bag?

    Mei had nowhere to sit.

    Clue: Look at the end of the bench.

    Ask where your child would sit if the seat beside them was full.

  5. 5. Why is Ravi saying sorry?

    The ball knocked Jo's hat off.

    Clue: Look at the ground beside Jo.

  6. 6. What is Arlo handing back?

    A drink bottle from Mei's bag.

    Clue: Look at the bag on the ground.

  7. 7. Why is Tabi sharing her umbrella?

    Jo has not got one.

    Clue: Look up above the two of them.

  8. 8. Why is Jo waving?

    Her friend has arrived for the party.

    Clue: Look at what Ravi is carrying.

    Ask who your child would like to wave to when they arrive.

  9. 9. Why is Mei giving the jumper back?

    The jumper is not hers.

    Clue: Look at the peg behind them.
