How to use these pages

  1. Print on A4, single sided, at 100% — not “fit to page”.
  2. Cut along the dashed lines to make the cards.
  3. Ask the question, then ask “what can you see?” before anything else.
  4. The last page is for you, not for the wall.

Cut these out. Show the picture, read the question, and talk.

Cut these into strips and lay the three out under the matching card.

The clue is the useful column. If your child is stuck, point at the clue rather than saying the answer.

    Talk about sounds that are very loud but harmless.

    Clue: Look at what is standing between them.

  4. 4. Why is Nia upset?

    A drink spilled on her drawing.

    Clue: Look at the table in front of her.

    Ask what her drawing looked like a minute ago.

  5. 5. Why is Sam surprised?

    There is a card in his lunch.

    Clue: Look inside his lunch box.

  6. 6. Why is Mei frustrated?

    Her bottle lid will not open.

    Clue: Look at what is in her hands.

  7. 7. Why is Arlo disappointed?

    The shop is closed.

    Clue: Look at the sign on the wall.

  8. 8. Why is Kit excited?

    Clue: Look at what is on the step.

    Clue: Look at the pegs on the wall.

    Ask what usually hangs on a peg at school.

  10. 10. Why is Nia relieved?

    Her lost teddy has been found.

    Clue: Look at what is in her arms.

    Ask how she might have been feeling before she found it.
